January Trainer Tip

Winter isn't coming... it's here.  Which means that now will be soon to follow.  When you go out to shovel, make sure you are protecting your spine, especially your lower back.  Every time you bend down to scoop up a pile of snow, you are performing a deadlift.  In order to do this safely, be sure to slightly bend your knees and brace your core.  Then push your hips backwards until you feel a good stretch in the back of your legs.  When you go to lift, keep your stomach tight and think about pushing your heels into the ground when standing up.  Your legs should be more tired after shoveling than your back.  Also, don't forget to stretch when you get back inside (and warm)!
