As 2018 is starting, a lot of you are probably making some resolutions regarding fitness. One of the biggest issues with these “New Year’s Resolutions” is that they are typically very vague and generic goals that often get pushed aside as the year moves along. Goals like “getting in shape,” “eat more fruits and vegetables,” and “go to the gym more often;” while headed in the right direction, aren’t S.M.A.R.T.

S.M.A.R.T. goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time based.

For example, if your goal is to “get in shape,” maybe you reshape that statement to say “I will increase the amount of time that I can run on the treadmill by 20 minutes by the end of June.”

You are also – obviously – more likely to actually achieve your goal if it is something attainable. Set the bar too high for yourself and you are likely to get discouraged and give up. Losing 100 pounds in a year – while possible – isn’t exactly an attainable goal; instead, try scaling your goal.

The beautiful thing about goals is that they are ever-changing. Set the bar a little too low? Reach your goal before the deadline you set? Great! Now you can set yourself a new goal, maybe even a little more ambitious this time and get going!
