April FitRewards Challenge: Sit-and-Reach

Information:

  • The sit-and-reach test is the most common way to measure lower back and hamstring flexibility.
  • It is useful to assess baseline flexibility before starting an exercise program, and can be repeated after several weeks to determine progress.
  • The test may also help determine a person’s risk for future pain or injury because tightness in the lower back and hamstrings is often related to muscle pain and stiffness.

 

Rules:

  • You will sit without shoes, and with the soles of your feet flat against the sit-and-reach box.
  • Inhale to prepare, and exhale as you slowly reach forward with both hands as far as possible, holding the position about 2 seconds.  Be sure to keep your legs extended straight.
  • Your score is the most distant point reached with the fingertips.  The best of 3 trials will be recorded.
