April Trainer Tip: Improving your Balance

March 31, 2016

April Trainer Tip

Improving your Balance

A: Absolute Focus: Balance is the ability to move your body and limbs around efficiently and quickly while being able to change direction without falling. When working to improve your balance it is key to focus on something approximately 4-6 feet ahead of self that is not moving.  Gradually work on gaining more confidence starting to gaze further forward eventually closing your eyes.  Working to actively draw your navel in towards your spine and relax shoulders down away from your ears. I also find in most balancing moves it helps to squeeze your glutes.

B: Body: To improve your balance you will need to start strengthening your Body especially the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and calves muscles. You may start with a basic squat or sit to stand exercise and then when you are ready start to shift your weight from one leg to the other eventually lifting the leg and holding it up for a few seconds then repeating on the other side. If you are uncertain of how to incorporate a strengthening routine, it might be time for you to consider working with a Personal trainer who can help you to reach your fitness goal of becoming better at balancing.

C: Classes: Another great way to not only increase your balance but also get stronger and more fit, is to participate in classes such as yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, TRX, Barre, and Core and More. These classes are a fun way to start working on your Balance and Core. By working to strengthen the Core, we are also allowing ourselves to develop the ability to balance for longer periods of time. Better balance with help us at every stage of life. It is important to have balance, both physically and mentally.
