Trainer Tip: Anaerobic Power

November 1, 2016

Anaerobic power is the ability to create short bursts of intense power. This is usually most pertinent for athletes in sports that are stop and go in nature. The body has several energy systems that can be trained with exercise, improving fitness in both long endurance and short, fast events. The initial system than can produce energy immediately is stored ATP and the phosphocreatine system (basically quick energy without using oxygen to create it). This system is primarily used for short bursts because as quickly as it is available, it also runs out, and needs to be replenished with rest. You can improve this energy system with training that uses short interval bursts, such as sprints or 30 second intervals on a bike. Also exercises like box jumps and jump rope rely on this quick energy. The more you train this energy system, the stronger the bursts become and the quicker the energy is restored!
