Learn Salsa Cubana

 Salsa Suelta Cuban Line Dance for all levels 

6:30-7:30 PM

Salsa Suelta is a catchy, challenging, “free style” line dance made popular in Cuba. In this series, we teach the timing, basic steps, and flow of Salsa Suelta, and integrate steps from other Cuban dances – Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Son, Pilon, and Makuta – and use these movements to build fun, low-impact cardio dance sequences that improve your health and prepare you to shine on any Salsa dance floor. No dance experience necessary, all levels welcome!

Salsa Partner Dance & Rueda De Casino Beginner Level 1

7:45-8:45 PM

Rueda de Casino” means “Salsa Wheel” and is a fun way to learn the musicality, repertoire, and lead-follow of Cuban style Salsa. In Rueda, dancers change partners in a circle while performing steps and combinations to the arrangement of a caller. Rueda allows students to dance with various partners in fluid motion, in a relaxed environment. In our beginner series we teach the set of steps needed to dance Salsa individually, as a single couple, and amongst multiple couples in a Rueda.

Attire: Please wear fitted attire suitable for dancing. Footwear should be fitted with medium level traction and flat soles to facilitate movement. Heals, sandals, and open shoes are not suitable. Dance sneakers and worn sneakers work well. Bring a water bottle and hand towel.

Island Members: $60 Each    Non-Members: $75 Each

Drop-in: $17 for nonmembers, $15 for members, pending space available.

Women On Weights

Strength training should have a place in everyone’s fitness regimen… particularly women! With Women On Weights, you’ll learn the proper way to incorporate strength training as well as core, balance, and flexibility exercises into your life through this circuit training style class. Join us for this 8+ week series. 

Will I bulk up lifting weights? No, but you can potentially burn more calories than with just a cardio workout. Research has shown you can continue to burn calories for several hours after strength training.



Members: $150*

Non-Members: $250*

Come As You Are Self Defense Class

Kick off Pride Month with us at Island Health & Fitness! Join our first ever Come As You Are Self Defense class with Martial Arts Instructor Symphony Howe. Symphony will provide two hours of training for individuals of all skill levels. Wear attire that you would go to work, sleep, school, or going out in, since attacks can happen at any time. Learn strategies for empowerment and defending yourself and those around you. This class is a safe space, open to everyone! 

$15 per person, includes free day pass at Island ($12 value).

Weightlifting 101

Starts May 1st 2021

Join Ashley Fennel and Jon Tanguay as they break down the basics behind the squat, deadlift, bench press, and pull-up.  They will cover appropriate warm-ups for each muscle group, proper body mechanics, and accessory exercises for improving strength in each exercise.
This class is a great option for those who have been struggling to increase strength or anyone who is interested in improving their technique and progressing on to Olympic-style weightlifting.

Space is limited to a maximum of 6 participants. You can register online through the Empower Me section of the website, or in-person at the Front Desk downtown.
