Abs not HABs

April 29, 2019

Cayuga Lake is a 42,800-acre lake that is the second largest of the Finger Lakes in central New York, with the largest watershed, is one of the 12 priority lakes impacted by HABs (Harmful Algal Blooms) in NYS.

Phosphorus pollution—from sources such as wastewater treatment plants, septic systems, and fertilizer runoff—is a major contributor.

When HABs occur in the lake, cyanobacteria (the harmful Algae) may concentrate in the northern and/or southern regions due to wind driven accumulation. Thus, bathing beaches and access locations in the north and Southern ends of Cayuga Lake, making the inlet susceptible.

The lake is used for swimming, fishing and boating. In addition, Cayuga Lake is a drinking water source for nearly 100,000 watershed residents.  It’s hard to be healthy with contaminated water!

IHF wants to give back, and will be selling Camelbak water bottles at the proshop, with proceeds going to the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network.

Sold for $20 in the proshop!
