Let Island Get You Spartan Ready

June 7, 2015

It may only be three miles, but the course at the first ever Spartan College Series will test competitor’s physical and mental thresholds. To give racers their best chance of crossing the finish line without collapsing at the end, in conjunction with the Cayuga Coaching Clinic, Island Health & Fitness has developed a Spartan Training Class.

Island’s first series-long obstacle course training class, the 10-week program starts on Monday, June 29 and meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. It will run from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

“Participants need to be aware that the training, much like the event itself, is going to be hard, intense, and requires a lot of effort,” said Island personal trainer Mark Alo, who is heading up the program. “The ability to lift and move your body weight with a fair amount of effort is required.”

A traditional Spartan Race has anywhere from 15-20 obstacles, including crawling under barbed wire, carrying sandbags and climbing up and over a wall. Alo said the IHF class will do its best to mimic the challenges competitors with face on race day.

“Participants will be exposed to similar tasks as to those presented in the race,” Alo noted. “Though it is impossible to know exactly what the race will bring, this training will present a multitude of exercises to prepare the body to meet a variety of different challenges, including pulling and carrying weight, climbing hills, and even throwing a spear”

While the class is designed to have competitors ready for the September 5 race on the Cornell campus, you don’t have to be signed up for the Spartan race or any obstacle race to take the class.

“The class presents a opportunity to get outside and participate in some very diverse HIIT training (High Intensity Interval Training) with some unique equipment not readily available to us everyday,” Alo added.
