June Trainer Tip: Clearing up Core Confusion

June 11, 2015

Core has become a buzzword in the fitness industry, leaving some of us wondering what in the world our “core” is? Most tend to believe that the rectus abdominis (or abs) make up our core, but there are many other muscles involved as well. The core musculature surrounds and stabilizes the spinal column. This includes all of the muscles of the trunk, erector spinae muscles, glutes, obliques, abs etc.

While it is important to train our ab muscles, we must not neglect those other muscles groups. Having strength in the muscles that surround our spine can protect us from injury, improve daily living, and even enhance athletic performance.  By strengthening our core we provide a more rigid midline that can transfer external forces to our muscles rather than to our spinal column.

Some great core strengthening exercises include:

Planks

Russian Twists

Leg lowers

Back Extensions

Push-ups

...and many more

For great ideas on core exercises, stop in to one of our group fitness classes ABBs (Abs, Butt, and Back), offered at both locations, or Core and More. Or consider a session with our highly qualified personal trainers.
